Wal-Mart plans to open roughly 150 stores around the country. Officials with the world's largest retailer are taking steps to broaden the scope of their work force.
During their annual meeting in Arkansas, the vice chairman of Wal-Mart promised shareholders the company will take steps to add more diversity to their staff roster and create additional opportunities for advancement.
According to Vice Chairman Eduardo Castro-Wright, 40 percent of the retail giant's general managers are minorities and out of that group only 20 percent are women.
Wal-Mart has been one of the bright spots in the nation's down economy, as more shoppers flock to the retail chain because of its low prices. But the chain has been under pressure to improve its labor practices.
Officials with Wal-Mart expect roughly 22,000 new jobs to be created as a result of the new stores opening.
