From FanHouse:

San Francisco 49ers running back Glen Coffee was missing from practice Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, with no explanation given for his absence. On Friday afternoon, the second-year back shockingly announced his retirement from the NFL after playing just one year in the league.

He released a statement which said the following: "This has been a tough decision for me, but at this time in my life I feel it's best for me that I move on from football. I appreciate what the 49ers, my teammates and coaches have done for me, and I wish them a blessed season and all the best in the future."

A third-round draft pick out of Alabama in 2009, Coffee appeared in 14 games for San Francisco last season, carrying the ball 83 times for 226 yards and a touchdown as the primary backup to Frank Gore. With Coffee now apparently out of the picture, Michael Robinson will take over as Gore's backup for the upcoming season, while rookie Anthony Dixon, a sixth-round draft pick out of Mississippi, will also be in the mix.
