CNBC's Shartia Brantley reports:
Quarterly reports are due this week from financial institutions Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and American Express, and from tech companies Google and Xerox.
The US Census Economic Indicators report on building permits and housing starts for December is expected on Wednesday. November 2009 building permits increased 6.0 percent month-to-month, with a 7.3 percent decrease from last year. November 2009 housing starts, including new home construction in non-permit areas, showed a month-to-month increase of 8.9 percent, but a 12.4 percent decrease year-to-year.
The Housing Market Index (HMI) report from the National Association of Home Builders and Wells Fargo is due Tuesday, providing insight on builder confidence in the market for new, single-family homes. An index number over 50 indicates that the majority of builders view sales conditions as good. The weak economy and high unemployment balanced government incentives and low interest rates to yield a one point decrease in the Index to 16, its lowest point since June 2009.
