CNBC's Shartia Brantley reports that earnings season officially kicks off this week as "Alcoa":http://www.alcoa.com/, a Dow Chemical component, reports fourth quarter earnings. Key reports on the economy due this week include the "Fed's Beige Book":http://www.federalreserve.gov/FOMC/Beigebook/2010/ (due Wednesday), which provides information on credit, consumer spending and manufacturing from the Fed's twelve districts, including "Atlanta":http://www.federalreserve.gov/FOMC/Beigebook/2009/20091202/6.htm, "Cleveland":http://www.federalreserve.gov/FOMC/Beigebook/2009/20091202/4.htm and "San Francisco":http://www.federalreserve.gov/FOMC/Beigebook/2009/20091202/12.htm. The December industrial production report and retail sales report are also due this week. The November industrial production report showed a 0.8 percent improvement, with manufacturing and mining contributing to the gain. The November retail sales report showed a 1.3 percent jump in sales, which was higher than expected. The January report on "Consumer Price Index (CPI)":http://www.bls.gov/CPI/ is due Friday. The December CPI report showed a slight increase in consumer prices overall due to rising gas, oil and used car prices.
