WASHINGTON (AP) -- The D.C. Council voted to censure former mayor Marion Barry over a report accusing him of violating conflict-of-interest laws.
The report said Barry, now a council member, helped award a $15,000 city contract to a woman he had a sexual relationship with. The council voted Tuesday to adopt the findings of the report and strip Barry of his chairmanship of the Committee on Housing and Workforce Development. The council voted unanimously, except for Barry, who did not vote.
Before the council voted, Barry told his colleagues that the report was "flawed" and that he was being "singled out unfairly." He said he violated no law, except "the law of common sense." He said stripping him of the committee chairmanship was a "great injustice."
