UN expert tells U.S. gov't to fight racial profiling

GENEVA (AP) -- The United Nations' top racism investigator says Washington needs to step up the fight against racial profiling. Mithu Muigai says in a 29-page report that law enforcement is responsible for the "most pronounced" racism now practiced in the United States. He says the Constitution clearly prohibits racial profiling, but evidence such as arrest and search rates shows a wide disparity between whites and nonwhites. He says state governments need to more, too. Muigai is a Kenyan lawyer who reports to the U.N. Human Rights Council. He will present his report to the 47-nation body June 16. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Esther Brimmer said Friday in Geneva that she received the report. She said Washington would study its findings and recommendations. Stay in the know.
