A tragic fire in Memphis leaves one toddler dead and the other, only two years old, in critical condition. The 3-year-old boy died at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital yesterday afternoon. The boys were home alone.
The Fire Department says the two little boys inhaled so much smoke they were already in critical condition once authorities got to them. Marilyn Wilson, the sister of the boys' mother Melanie Dunn, said she and Dunn left the boys home alone to go shopping. They were gone about an hour when they got a call about the fire.
Dunn is a 23-year-old single mother with another 5-year-old boy who was at school. Wilson says Dunn doesn't leave the children home alone "all the time."
"Some kind of way they set something on fire, I don't know how it happened," Wilson said. "Because we weren't there."
Memphis police say the mother may be facing criminal neglect homicide charges, once the medical examiner releases the official cause of death. Fire investigators don't yet know what started the fire.
