A Texas teenager who told police she found her disabled grandmother dead has been accused of being the killer.
Texas City police said Theretta Gayden Miller, 57, was killed in her home at the Mansions at Moses Lakes, a community for seniors, in the 2200 block of 34th Street at about midnight on Feb. 12.
Miller, who was legally blind and used a wheelchair, was beaten and stabbed at least four times until she died, police said.
Miller's 19-year-old granddaughter, Cheretta Smith, told police that she and a friend found the body.
After questioning several people, Smith was charged with murder. She was arrested at her home on Friday and taken to the Texas City Jail.
"The attack was vicious. It was a vicious attack," said Sgt. Joe Stanton with the Texas City Police Department.
The arrest occurred hours before Miller was laid to rest.
"Everything will be alright. It's an emotional time, but faith overrides emotion," Pastor Louis Simpson Jr. said.
The motive for the killing is not yet known.
Police said Smith sometimes cared for her grandmother and was supposed to the night Miller died.
"I believe on and off she did. She was a second caregiver for her grandmother," Stanton said.
