During a concert held at Central Park last Friday, Grammy-winning, R&B artist Mary J. Blige told her fans she may have some very big news -- that she'd recently received her GED -- but the news became controversial with the singer's subsequent announcement of her acceptance to Howard University.

Representatives for the university eventually gained word of the announcement and later issued a statement, implying that Blige's comments regarding her admission into the school may have been premature.

The university released the following statement, which also politely denied Blige's announcement, as reported by the Washington Post: "We encourage Ms. Blige to continue her studies and welcome her consideration of Howard University in the future. We are happy to work with Ms. Blige on completing the formal process for admission."

A representative for Blige responded to the university's statement, contesting that Blige had in fact been accepted into the school.

According to Hiphopwired.com, Blige came to her own defense using her Twitter page, posting a series of tweets including the following: "For those of u that who think I would lie about being accepted in2 Howard, I have all the proof and the acceptance letter."
