City where Civil War began getting King memorial

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The city where the Civil War began is getting a memorial to slain civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The Post and Courier of Charleston "reports":http://bit.ly/rguuhJ that Charleston City Council has approved an agreement with the National Park Service to place the memorial at Liberty Square -- the four-acre park at the Fort Sumter National Monument Visitors Center in Charleston. Fort Sumter Superintendent Tim Stone says the monument is appropriate for the square. A citizens committee working on the memorial will decide its design and then raise money. There is no estimate of the cost. The only public tribute to King in Charleston is a street sign marking a neighborhood as the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial District. _Copyright 2011 The Associated Press._
